Should I go see Star Trek?

Fish
That's the $10 question, isn't it? I keep hearing how people really liked it, and then read reviews that pretty much tell me that I'm not going to enjoy it all that much.

(If you're wondering, I didn't much care for the first one for various reasons, the smallest and pettiest of which was the plethora of miniskirts for no logical reason. Honestly, at this point, I'm not sure I really remember most of the specifics of the other reasons.)

(The pettiest reason I am not too thrilled about this movie? THE LACK OF THE COLON IN THE TITLE.)

Maybe instead of Star Trek, I should go see Iron Man 3 again.

I do freelance work for the local distributor for Trek, there was an actual meeting about how to translate the title to Portuguese correctly, so here in Brazil? They added the colon.

Hah! Yes, take that, Star Trek!

Well, I'm emphatically NOT seeing it and the majority of reviews I've stumbled across have been either negative or neutral, for what it's worth. But I'm not the most unbiased person about these reboot things they're trying to pretend are anything like Star Trek.

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of positivity about it except for people who I don't tend to share opinions with. There have been a few, though.

I saw it. I...am not a Trekkie. I hadn't seen the other movie, and my housemates sat me down and made me watch the first new one and then dragged me to see STID. I thought some parts were stupid, there was some terrible science, but I didn't think it was a waste of $6. I'm not the audience, though; I knew enough to get a few references. My housemates didn't seem to pissed about it, for what it's worth, and they're the Trek fans. (On the other hand, they watched all of Enterprise, so...)

I'm more looking forward to Pacific Rim.

I haven't decided whether to go or not. I'll probably see it eventually, but may prefer to watch a dvd so I can adjust the volume--the past 3 times I've been to the movies the sound has been HORRIBLY loud, even though I actually wore earplugs!

A friend who is a long term and loyal ST fan (as am I, though I didn't watch TOS till I saw it in reruns starting about 1980, I think it was) was not pleased with it at all. She didn't like the loudness, the plot holes, the Spock/Uhura being shown on screen. She loved Bones McCoy but didn't see enough of him.

I had actually seen some pretty good reviews of it, which surprised me. Still dithering, here. If I skip it, it'll be the first time I have not seen a ST movie as soon as it hit the theaters.

I had many problems with the last one, but kept telling myself "AU, it's an AU" and managed to enjoy it that way.

I'll probably see it eventually, but maybe on DVD. I sort of hate being the party pooper--I was actually kind of glad my friends did a spur of the moment thing for it I didn't hear about until later, as I was already concerned I wouldn't enjoy it as much as they did.

I've seen enough reviews to know that if I go, I'm going to have a bad time. I didn't see the last one in theatres, either (my dad rented it six months later). It sounds like even people who liked the first one are less happy with this one.

Fortunately, I have plenty of other things I need to see this weekend to avoid it.

What are you planning to do instead?

In fact, I have yet to see Iron Man 3 due to a various set of circumstances. That's first on the list!

I'm a pretty hardcore Trek fan, and I liked it quite a bit. It's an imperfect movie and I understand why a lot of people didn't enjoy it, or at least found it problematic. It is, sometimes, and there are certainly plot holes large enough to drive the ship through.

But I found it quite fun--I liked most of the characters, I enjoyed the references to the original, I liked the music, I found it well-acted.

Then again, I have the mental capacity of a drunken gnat these days as well as a longstanding fondness for action movies with pretty people being quippy and beating things up. So YMMV.

I like action movies and quipping and (characters) beating things up! Your reaction elsewhere is actually why I'm still even debating. :-)

I skipped it, because I've gleaned enough from the reviews to know I'll hate it. I'll watch when it comes out on direct tv. Dwinn saw it this morning and said it was the stupidest movie he'd ever seen.

AND I STILL HAVEN'T SEEN IRON MAN 3 WAH.

WAIT. WHAT?! WHAT?!?!?!?!

You gave me Iron Man/Stargate prompt before I saw the first movie and now I've seen it?!

Actually, I was just telling trout in chat that I'm a bit mad at the movie because it's kinda spoiled my still WIP fic for being way too coincidental with a few moments.

Her solution...finish it anyway!

I loved it, but I am easy to please.

It wasn't perfect, but Oh Man! The parts they got right I found them fabulous.

On the flip side I had a friend who saw it and didn't like it. She found parts that referenced the original timeline distracting and confusing.

I'm pretty sure I'll get enough of the references to the original timeline for it to make sense, but I don't have a strong attachment to WoK, so I might be okay that way. And spaceships are, as someone said elsewhere, always good. :-)

I haven't seen it yet, and I'm not sure I will. I enjoyed the reboot when it came out, because they got a lot of things sufficiently right -- but in retrospect, the wrong stuff bugged me more and more, and the movie slid into Not Worth Seeing Again in my mind. I had my doubts about STID pretty much from the start.

My partner has seen it, and commented, "If we hadn't just seen Iron Man 3, I would have thought STID was a pretty good movie. But the writing was so good in IM3 . . . and STID is mediocre, and I couldn't ignore how stupid the stupid parts are." She did think Zachary Quinto was pretty much worth the ticket all by himself.

We may go eventually, or borrow the DVD. She's said she'd be willing to watch it again as long as she was free to snark at it.

You misunderstand the title. It's not supposed to be Star Trek: Into Darkness; the title is just letting us know where the star trek is going. Now excuse me while I make another road trek to the liquor store. ;-)
